FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: PART 10

What does it mean to truly be in control? Not the white-knuckle, grit-your-teeth kind of control, but the deep, lasting kind that holds steady even when life throws us around a sharp curve or pushes every button we have? This message takes us straight to the heart of the ninth fruit of the Spirit: self-control. And the first thing we discover is that it is not about willpower at all. The Greek word behind self-control in Galatians 5:22 points to the restraining of passions and appetites, and the power to do that does not come from us. It comes from what the New Testament calls dunamis power, the same explosive, transforming authority of the Holy Spirit described in Acts 1:8. We explore a striking image from Proverbs 25:28, where a person without self-control is compared to a city with broken-down walls. In the ancient world, walls were everything. They were the difference between safety and destruction. When our self-control crumbles, we become vulnerable in the same way, open to the enemy in our thoughts, our words, our emotions, and our appetites. The relevance to our daily lives could not be more direct. Every battle we face as believers begins in the mind, long before it ever shows up in our behavior. That is where the real war is fought, and that is where the Holy Spirit wants to meet us first.
